Jair Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.
The one-time leader was sentenced of planning a government overthrow in last fall and sentenced more than 27 years in prison, but he was staying under home detention pending court reviews.
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" emerged.
This included attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a call for a supporters' gathering that could enable a chance to flee".
Judicial Records Show Flight Fears
In a paperwork permitting the detention, Justice Moraes said intelligence from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the ex-president's aim to disable the surveillance device to ensure success in his getaway".
This, it said, would be made easier by the chaos caused by the gathering called by his offspring.
His son, his son Flávio, who works as a congressional representative, called for a assembly of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday evening.
The senator wrote on digital networks on last Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your homeland, or observe everything from your mobile device there on your sofa? I call on you to battle with us."
He said the gathering would be so backers could seek divine intervention for his physical condition and for the restoration of democratic rule in our land."
Embassy Asylum Concerns
Part of the magistrate's determination was the possibility of the former president's "relocation to foreign missions near the dwelling, considering that the investigations revealed a record of arranging to ask for protection through a embassy office", a declaration said.
The court filing underscores that the American diplomatic mission in the national capital, Brasilia, is located around 13km from his dwelling.
Worldwide Consequences
The former president's legal troubles have drawn the ire of fellow populist conservative American leader President Trump, prompting him to impose a fifty percent tax on imports of Brazilian goods.
Bolsonaro is being kept in a federal law enforcement building in the capital and will experience a imprisonment assessment on the next day.
Recent Legal Requests
It was only on Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Supreme Court to authorize him to serve his whole jail sentence under home confinement, with digital surveillance.
They also asked that Bolsonaro be permitted to leave his home for medical care, saying he demanded regular treatment for pulmonary infections and other illnesses.
Background on Conviction
Bolsonaro was determined responsible of heading a plot aimed at maintaining his control after he was defeated in the national vote to his political opponent, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Top judicial officials said that he knew of a plan which encompassed plans to murder Lula and his running partner, his vice-presidential candidate, and to arrest and execute the presiding judge - the Supreme Court justice who has been presiding over Bolsonaro's trial.
The plot was stopped because it couldn't obtain the backing of the military leaders. The current president was inaugurated without incident on 1 January 2023.
But a week later, on January 8th, many his backers invaded and destroyed official structures in the capital, Brazil's capital.
The law enforcement took action and around 1,500 people were arrested.
The judges found that the protesters had been encouraged by him whose scheme, they said, was for the Brazilian military to step in, restore order and return him to office.
At the moment, the legal team called the decades-long sentence unreasonably severe".
He was also banned from campaigning for office until twenty-sixty - a decade minus two years after the completion of his term.
The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a targeted investigation" and said it was intended to stop him running in the next presidential race.
