The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States against five Europeans involved in combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been central to campaigns to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the move.
The bans were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the rules are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.
This row threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
