Fed Cuts Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank reduced interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second reduction this year amid financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve

The decision to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement reads. “Inflation has moved up and remains moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Affects Monetary Moves

The Fed usually analyzes labor statistics to assess employment trends, including the count of employment gains added to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in early September, before the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in August.

The number of jobs created to the economy in August was down by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.

Private Data Show Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was set to release September’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its publication when the shutdown started. Employment data company ADP reported recently that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, which he had earlier said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Shows Moderate Increase

Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still released its inflation report for last month that showed that costs are rising, albeit gradually. Costs rose 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In April, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
